Quality Quality

Quality is about ways of knowing how good your services are and helping them to get better.
What is Valuing People image What does Valuing People say?

That the organisations that pay for and provide services for people with learning disabilities should make sure that they are the best they can be, and that they have ways of making them better.

Objective : To ensure that all agencies commission and provide high quality, evidence-based and continuously improving services which promote both good outcomes and best value.

Services for people with learning disabilities don't look enough at how good they are, and ways of getting better.

It is not easy for people to make complaints, because the ways of complaining are not accessible.

People from black and ethnic minorities don't get the services they need.

People with learning disabilities are not always kept safe.

This bit of Valuing People also talks about the Care Standards Act 2000. These are rules about standards that care services have to reach. You can find out more about the National Care Standards Commission from our Housing Page.
What did Valuing People say would happen?

  • Partnership Boards would write 'Quality assurance frameworks'

  • There would be National Minimum Standards for residential care for people with learning disabilities.

  • The 'Social Care Institute of Excellence' would be a place where people could find out good information about what worked to help people with learning disabilities. They would find this out from really good research.

  • The Department of Health would bring out guidance on user surveys in 2001

  • Local councils would have to to collect information about where people had been abused

  • There would be guidance from the Department of Health on 'physical interventions with people with learning disabilities'

  • There would be new ways to help people give evidence in court.
