Letter 20 Jan 2010 Dear colleague letter of 20 January 2010

What does Valuing People say? That more people will learning disabilities should get the chance to do all kinds of work, if possible getting paid. Objective : To enable more people with learning disabilities to participate in all forms of employment, wherever possible in paid work, and to make a valued contribution to the world of work. It is thought that less than one in ten people with learning disabilities have jobs. People don't think people with learning disabilities can achieve, so they don't get training and help to find jobs. Helping people find jobs is not seen as important. The rules about benefits can mean that people lose out if they get jobs. It can be difficult to move from 'supported employment' into other paid jobs that people might want. The Government wants more people with learning disabilities to have jobs.

What does Valuing People say will happen?
  • New Government target to get more people with learning disabilities into work
  • New Workstep Programme will help people with learning disabilities
  • The Department of Health and the Department for Education and Employment [now the Department for Children, Schools and Families] will look at links between supported employment and day services
  • Job Brokers for the New Deal for Disabled People will get better at working with people with learning disabilities
  • Disabled people starting work will not lose their Disability Living Allowance unfairly
  • Learning Disability Partnership Boards to write local employment strategies by February 2003
  • More employment opportunities in public services for people with learning disabilities
