Long Stay Long Stay Hospitals

A Long Stay Hospital is a place that some people with learning disabilities live in. Most of the Long Stay Hospitals in England are closed. Some closed many years ago.

What is Valuing People image What does Valuing People say?

Valuing People said that we know that Long Stay Hospitals are not good places to live in. It said that everyone still in a hospital should move to somewhere better by April 2004. It took a while to work out where the hospitals were and how many people lived there. No-one had a list of them all. Some hospitals were already closing, but some did not have plans to close or had people who did not want them to close. The Learning Disability Taskforce and the Government Ministers have had regular reports on how the hospitals are closing. They agreed to extend the closure deadline to March 2006. This way we can be sure that everyone has the right move for them and not a rushed one just to hit the date. The Recovery Support Unit are part of the NHS that makes sure that things happen. They meet with the hospitals that have not closed. Strategic Health Authorities are the people that make sure that things happen in their area of the NHS. Their job is to help the hospitals and make sure they close.

What are the Valuing People Support Team doing?

The Valuing People Support Team meets with the people in each hospital that is not closed. They find out what is happening. They are see what help they can give local people to help this bit of Valuing People happen. We also had regular meetings called the hospital closure network where people met up and shared ideas and worked on problems. We keep having the meetings and go to each hospital until they are all closed. We check the numbers of hospitals and people living there each April and October.  Orchard Hill has not closed as there has been a Judicial Review. This is a discussion with lawyers and decision by a judge. This has delayed the closure.
