Community Being Included
This part of the website is about not feeling or being left out.

Its about making sure that people with learning disabilities are included in the community.

In this section of the website you will find information about:
  • Being part of your community
  • Valuing everyone - including people with high support needs

What is Valuing People image What does Valuing People say?
Valuing People says

"too many people with learning disabilities and their families lead lives apart with limited opportunities and poor life chances... People with learning disabilities should have the same opportunities as other people to lead full and active lives."

It also says

"Being part of the mainstream is something most of us take for granted. we go to work, look after families, visit our GPs, use transport, and go to the swimming pool or cinema. Inclusion means enabling people with learning disabilities to do those ordinary things, make use of mainstream services and be fully included in the local community."

People with learning disabilities can live just as good a life as anyone else.

Learning
For too many years, people with learning disabilities have been seen mainly as how services see them so as :
  • patients
  • clients
  • residents

Today we need to see people in a different way as:
  • citizens
  • consumers
  • voters

But mainly as people - with the same hopes and dreams about their lives as other people.

A good website to find out about ideas about inclusion is www.inclusion.com

Values of Inclusion
Taken from the Scottish Human Services website at www.shstrust.org.uk

Everyone is born in
We are born among people, and only sent away later

All means all
Everyone capable of breathing is entitled to be included. No one is too difficult, too old, too poor or too disabled to qualify

Everyone needs to be present
If we have never been present, no one will know when we're missing

Everyone needs to belong
We need to know there's a place for us, not just a space for us

Everyone is ready
None of us has to pass a test or meet a set of criteria before we can be included

Everyone can learn
As human beings we all grow and change and make mistakes: and we are all capable of learning

Everyone needs support
Sometimes some of us need more support than others

Everyone can communicate
Not using words doesn't mean we don't have anything to say

Everyone can contribute
We need to recognise, encourage and value each person's contributions - including our own

Together we are better
We are not dreaming of a world where everyone is like us - difference is our most important renewable resource
