Bus Purple Transport

This part of the website is about transport. People with learning disabilities are always telling us that more needs to be done to make it easier for them to get about.
What is Valuing People image What does Valuing People say?

Valuing People says to be able to get about and have a good life, you need good transport. It said that there were many problems with transport for people with learning disabilities. People who run transport services, and people who work in them do not always understand what people with learning disabilities need. It said the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (now there is a Department for Transport) wanted to work with people with learning disabilities. It said it would:
  • Make the new bits of the Disability Discrimination Act that are about transport, happen
  • Make training courses for staff who work in transport
  • Think more about meeting the needs of disabled people, through Local Transport Plans (see our page about Transport Plans)
  • Include people with learning disabilities on its 'Disabled Person's Transport Advisor Committee' Now Richard West, a man with a learning disability, is a member of the group. Find out more from www.dptac.gov.uk
It said the government would ask people about new plans to make it against the law to discriminate against disabled people. It said it would look at how well 'Local transport plans' meet the needs of disabled people.
